Being that I am half Puerto Rican, it is very disturbing and embarrassing to me that I can not speak Spanish. I’ve always asked my mom to teach me but she claims she doesn’t know it well enough to teach me. Which is a complete lie because she can actually carry on a full conversation.
Even my father who grew up in New York can understand and if need be reply in spanish. The same with the majority of my cousins who grew up in New York. I am the only one who can neither speak or understand. My grandmother speaks nothing but spanish to me until she gets frustrated that I can not respond. So I’ve decided to take matters into my own hands.
My mother now tells me, you are old enough now teach yourself. So that is what I plan on doing. I have bought myself a little notebook and I will attempt to teach myself to Read, Write, and Speak Spanish. Not only is this important for me on a personal basis, it is also important for everyday life, and for my professional life.
Has anybody else taught themselves to speak another language? I will keep you guys updated on my process and provide information on my fav. websites that are helping me.
